Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Fahr Hoof Template?
An 11-gauge steel plate cut to different sizes and shapes to mimic different size and shape of horse hooves.
What inspired the development of the Fahr Template system?
I didn’t always have a horse available on days and times when I needed to practice measuring feet and fitting shoes for upcoming contests or certifications.
What problem were you trying to solve when creating these templates?
I wanted to be able to take my time to do my homework to get my measurements and fit as accurate as possible while at the same time minimizing the horses time standing in the shop or barn and limiting the risk of them getting bored or anxious. Once I began using the templates to dial in measurements and fit, then I could implement my measurements on the horse without the horse standing for an unnecessary amount of time.
What are the primary benefits of using the templates?
The template gives a model of a foot available 24-7 for practice and reference. They are beneficial to any farrier wanting to improve their forging skills for certifications or to improve the quality of fit while having a realistic shape and size in mind. The template helps to improve efficiency of measuring and fitting feet, while practicing at your own convenience without horses available.
What makes the Fahr Templates different from other hoof measuring or pattern systems?
The templates come in a larger variety of shapes and sizes. Each pattern has been drawn and developed from horses that either I or other farriers have worked on.
What is the difference between the Front (F Series) and Hind (H Series) templates?
F represents patterns that mimic front feet, and H represents patterns that mimic hind feet. CF and CH represent size and shape patterns that are designed more specifically for individuals that are perusing a certification.
How are the template sizes determined?
They are determined by the feet in which inspired my drawings. Feet that I or other farriers encountered over the years of competing or working day-to-day. Some patterns may have relatively close shapes but differing measurements which requires different size and length of bar stock or size of keg shoe.
Are the sizes tied to hoof dimensions, shoe sizes, or another measurement system?
Yes tied to hoof dimensions.
How should a farrier determine which template size to use?
First and foremost, all shapes and sizes are good to practice with. The requirements of the upcoming competition or certification will dictate which size and type of pattern to use.
How do the templates assist with hoof fitting, shoe selection, fabrication, or forging?
The templates will show inconsistency in length, fit, and expansion while making shoes or fitting keg shoes. Knowing areas of needed improvement based on the fit of the shoe to the template can help guide where to adjust.
Do they help improve hoof balance, symmetry, or consistency?
Not directly. Indirectly building your eye and skill help improve fit and function while shoeing which improves balance and symmetry.
