AFA Pattern Modification Guide
Altering AFA Hoof Patterns
Dennis C. Manning CJF

AFA Certified Farrier Candidates are required submit front and hind pattern plates with their shoe display. These may be patterns of the candidate's own design or pattern plates purchased from the AFA. The candidate is responsible for modifying plates for clip fit.
A centerline and coloring of the nailing area of the white line are two additional alterations candidates may choose to incorporate in pattern plates. These are demonstrated here on AFA pattern plates.
A vertical line drawn through the center of the frog and hoof of patterns makes it easier to visualize the correct placement of shoe modifications such as Toe Clip, Square Toe, Rolled Toe, Rocker Toe, Extended Heels and Straight Bar.

Bisect the hoof surface of the pattern through the center of the frog using a pencil and ruler.

Use a permanent marker to finish the centerline.

Color the area representing the white line with permanent marker of a color that is easily seen through the nail holes of a properly fit horseshoe.

Notch for a toe clip is centered on the centerline.

For side clips first select and shape a horseshoe to fit the pattern plate.

After selecting and fitting the horseshoe, forge clips and mark the pattern.

Clip notch may be started with a hacksaw.

The edge of a horse rasp and a file can be used to cut the clip notch. A grinding wheel is fast and easy but the aluminum can plug the grinding wheel.

Make sure clip notches allow the shoe to be positioned where intended.
